Information about Bahrain
Country
Bahrain
The Kingdom of Bahrain is a former province of Iran. Bahrain is a generally flat and arid archipelago, consisting of a low desert plain rising gently to a low central escarpment, in the Persian Gulf, east of Saudi Arabia. The highest point is the 134 m (440 ft) Jabal ad Dukhan. The official religion of Bahrain is Islam, which the majority of the population practices. The island is home to castles including Qalat Al Bahrain which has been lis...ted by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. Bahrain is a constitutional monarchy headed by the King, the head of government is the Prime Minister. Country is split into five governments.

In a region experiencing an oil boom, Bahrain has the fastest growing economy in the Arab world. It was named the world’s fastest growing financial center by the City of London’s Global Financial Centres Index.
Capital
Manama
Manama is the capital and largest city of Bahrain with an approximate population of 155,000 people. Manama has emerged as the capital of independent Bahrain after periods of domination by Portugal and Persians earlier in its history. Today, it is a modern capital with an economy based around the sales promotion industry as crude oil takes a less pronounced role in the economy. (See Economy of Bahrain). Because of its thriving economy, a Danish firm has proposed a skyscraper that would be over 1 km (3,281 ft) tall, called the Murjan Tower. Currently only a concept, if built it would be the world's tallest man-made structure, even surpassing the super tall Burj Dubai skyscraper, although it would be shorter than the Nakheel Tower in Dubai if both are built.
Biggest cities
Al Muharraq
Muharraq (meaning Place of Ashes), is Bahrain's second largest city, and served as its capital until 1923. The Muharraq Town was established by the Al Bin Ali Utub tribe as early as the late 17th Century. It has long been a centre of religiosity. The city is located on Muharraq Island The city's origins are ancient, going back to the time of Dilmun some five thousand years ago, but it came to prominence in the historical records during the era of Tylos when Bahrain came under domination of the Selucid Greeks, and Muharraq was the centre of a pagan cult dedicated to the shark god, Awal. The city's inhabitants, who depended upon seafaring and trade for their livelihood, worshipped Awal in the form of a large statue of a shark located in the city. Bahrain International Airport is located on the island. Near Muharraq there is a man made island called Amwaj Islands, which has many large buildings, hotels and beaches. Muharraq is also known for its traditional market, or souq. Muharraq island is also home to Muharraq Club, which is Bahrain's most successful football club. Muharraq has been a place of arts and traditional music.
